Phobjikha is one of the most spectacular destinations in Bhutan, frequented by both tourists and local people alike. Surrounded by lush vegetation, this breathtaking valley is home to the endangered black necked crane, which migrates to Phobjikha every winter for breeding. The way local people live in harmony with these birds is truly awe inspiring. In fact the community works in tandem with the Royal Society for Protection of Nature to safeguard the habitat of this endangered species. Situated at an altitude of 3,000 meters, Phobjikha is a glacial valley on the western slopes of the Black Mountains, bordering the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. The surrounding hills are inhabited by varieties of exotic animals like the barking deer, sambar, serow, Himalayan black bear, leopard and red fox.
